Description
Summary:Twelve Big Navy Planes Start North. Twelve Big Navy Planes Start North Two more squadrons of United States Navy planes took off from the Naval Air Station at Sand Point early today and headed northward to Sitka, Alaska, where they will join a squadron which arrived at the Southwestern Alaska point yesterday afternoon from Seattle. The twelve planes, VP squadrons 9 and 12, had ideal flying conditions for their trip. Each of the twin-motored planes carries six men. From Sitka two squadrons of planes will make side trips to study flying conditions and landing points and one squadron will make longer flights to Southwestern Alaska settlements. The flight is directed by Lieut. Comdr. George D. Price, wing commander of the three squadrons. The planes will be fueled at Sitka and Kodiak by three aircraft tenders. They will return to Seattle about August 10.
