Description
Summary:Army Reserve Officers Train At Local Fort: Contour Maps, Machine Guns, Automatic Rifles Studied Thursday. Army Reserve Officers Train At Local Fort Contour Maps, Machine Guns, Automatic Rifles Studied Thursday. Contour maps, machine guns and automatic rifles occupied the attention of the 416th Reserve infantry regiment during the morning of the third day of their two-week encampment at Fort Missoula. The afternoon of Thursday, the third day, was occupied with offensive combat principles. Members of the regiment in camp include Lieutenant Colonel J. P. Sternhagen of Glasgow, commanding; Major L. E. Vidal of Great, Falls; Captain H. H. H. Clark and Captain Alex P. Peterson of Missoula; First Lieutenants Stephen Hanson and Frank Thrailkill of Missoula; Henry H. Wild of Billings; E. A. Yeater of Kalispell and John P. Spielman of Anaconda; Second Lieutenants Raymond E. Wilins, Intake; Thomas J. Milburn, Missoula; Glenn A. David, Lewis- town; Dean W. Stebbins, Billings; Raymond O. Lewis, Roundup; Clarence E. Kerlee, Butte; G. R. Underwood, Whitefish; William D. Coey, Deer Lodge; Gordon H. Eastman, Lewistown; Robert McCandless, Beaver Creek park; Edward Mc- Devitt, Culbertson; Charles R. Quigley, Helena; Gerald Ragsdale, Columbus; Earl M. Walters, Boze- man; Elwood Hooper Young, Harrison. Major T. A. Reiner, executive instructor for the regiment on detached service from the Sixty- sixth regular army infantry regiment is acting in an advisory capacity at the camp. Of the officers present Colonel Sternhagen, Major Reiner, Major Vidal and Captain Clark were in service during the World war. The colonel served with the Forty-first and Fifth divisions and as observer with the French army and held the rank of captain. He was appointed commanding officer of the 416th Reserve infantry regiment in February of this year. Major Vidal enjoyed the unusual experience of serving concurrently with his father in that conflict, although they did not meet until the engagement at St. Mihiel where Major Vidal, Sr., was in service in that rank with the Forty-fourth Coast artillery and his son as a first lieutenant in the tank corps. Major Vidal, Jr., is now wearing the gold leaves signifying his rank which were worn by his father in 1918. Major Reiner saw service with the Eighty-seventh infantry regiment of the Eleventh division and was promoted from the grade of first lieutenant to captain during the war. Captain Clark served with the Seventh bombardment squadron, Panama Canal department, during the early months of the war. The signing of the armistice saw him in Walter Reed hospital, Washington, D. C, as a result of an airplane crash. The other officers on duty with the Montana regiment at Fort Missoula have come from Reserve Officers' Training corps training in various colleges throughout the country and from Citizens' Military Training corps graduates.
