Jones Yields Job To M'nary Out as Assistant Party Leader Means Shake-Up in Senate G. 0. P. Machinery. Faction Scar Heals But Independents From West Show No Disposition to Return to Fold. WASHINGTON, Nov. 30. (AP)-The resignation today of Senator Jones of Washington as assistant republican leader, made certain a broad reorganization of the faction-split party in the senate for the next session. Senator Jones resigned to become chairman of the important appropriations committee, a post made vacant by the death of Senator Warren of Wyoming. It appeared tonight that Senator McNary of Oregon, advanced by the "young guard" republican regulars as their spokesman, would succeed Jones as assistant leader. Hoover Seeks Junction. President Hoover has been in consultation with senate leaders this week and there are indications that he has shown considerable interest in bringing about a reunion of the republican forces. Senator Watson of Indiana, republican leader, also has been busy since his return from Florida in ironing out party troubles. Senator Smoot of Utah announced, after a White House call today, that he had decided to continue as chairman of the powerful finance committee, which handles the tariff and tax reduction legislation, rather than become head of the appropriations committee. Senator Vandenberg, Michigan, one of the leaders of the "young guard," was a White House visitor today. With old guard and young guard in the senate apparently working together again under the leadership of Senator Watson, there is still no sign of a reunion between this group and the western independents who have bolted the party. Letter of Resignation. The letter of resignation by Senator Jones, written to Senator Watson, follows: "I herewith resign my position as assistant leader of the senate, to take effect upon the selection of my successor by the republican conference. "In this connection, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the conference for the honor it has done me by selecting me as assistant leader. "I find that the work of the committees will make it impossible for me to be present on the floor of the senate during the session as it will be necessary for an assistant leader to be in order to render most effective service." Senator Watson expressed regret at the retirement of Senator Jones. The Indiana senator said a party conference would be called early in the session to select a successor.
