Description
Summary:Colonel Ripley Dies In Crash:Former Fort Wright Commandant Loses Life In Canada-Wife With Him. COLONEL RIPLEY DIES IN CRASH Former Fort Wright Commandant Loses Life in Canada—Wife With Him. Colonel Henry A. Ripley, commanding officer at Port George Wright from 1925 to 1928, was killed in an automobile accident September 25 near Dunville, Ont., Canada. Colonel Ripley's wife was with him at the time of the accident, but details of the tragedy were not reported. Colonel and Mrs. Ripley, with their two daughters, Mrs. Edward H. McDaniel (Katherine Ashley Ripley) and Marjorie Ripley, made a wide circle of friends in Spokane during their station here at the fort and their home was a center of hospitality. Colonel Ripley came to Spokane in 1923 from Fort Missoula, Mont., to assume temporary command of Fort Wright during the absence of troops at Fort Lewis. He was later assigned as military instructor to the 161st national guard regiment and on the transfer of Colonel Ira C. Welborn in 1925 was placed in command of Fort Wright. Leaving Spokane he went to Fort McPherson, at Atlanta, Ga., to assume the duties of chief of the organized reserve corps of the Fourth area, comprising all the southern states. Later he was head of the First United States army reserve district, with headquarters in Los Angeles. April 6, 1934, Colonel Ripley was assigned to the local post in Los Angeles, but was forced to resign shortly thereafter because of physical disability. He moved to Pasadena, where he was awaiting army retirement. Besides Mrs. Ripley and the two aughters, Colonel Ripley is survived by a son, Henry, who is a United states navy lieutenant stationed at San Diego. The elder daughter, Mrs. McDaniel, and her husband, Lieutenant McDaniel, U. S. A., have recently arrived in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from the Philippines.
