Summary:Spokane Rates As Pioneer Of The Air. SPOKANE RATES AS PIONEER OF THE AIR SPOKANE'S name will come to mind when air races are run across the country, as the name of Colonel Lindbergh flashes to the fore with every mention of an airplane solo flight across the ocean. Just as Lindbergh was first to accomplish the history-making feat which made him world famous, Spokane was the first to conceive the idea of a national air derby. The races held here in 1927 and the derby flown in connection with them marked a turning point in competitive aviation in this country. It is easy now to cross the plains and bad lands of the middle west and mountain states, but it was not so simple and sale a procedure 100 years ago. It seemed easier even to make the second flight across the north Atlantic because Lindbergh already had done it. His experiences counted for something. The race of Benny Howard and Roscoe Turner from Los Angeles to Cleveland last month was made safer and faster because of the experiences which have come from like trials since Spokane pioneered in the field of cross-country aviation in 1927.
