Summary:Oregon Breaks Cold Records. Winter So Severe Child Freezes To Mattress -- Jackrabbits Succumb. OREGON BREAKS COLD RECORDS Winter So Severe Child Freezes to Mattress— Jackrabbits Succumb. PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 8. (AP)— It was so cold in Oregon today that a baby froze to his mattress —but was freed without casualty —ducks froze in ponds, logging operations ground to a standstill because logs were frozen solid in lakes, jackrabbits died and as for records—they fell galore. The weather observer for United Air Lines at Meacham, atop the Blue mountains, put in another bid for the coldest spot in the United States by reporting a minimum of 41 degrees below zero, three under Thursday's arctic temperature. It was 22 degrees below zero again in Baker, the third consecutive day the thermometer has been under 20 degrees and it constituted a 47-year record. Bend reported 21 below, Klamath Falls 10 below, The Dalles 7 below, La Grande 13 below, Pendleton 16 below and all sections of the Hood River valley experienced subzero temperatures. The Columbia river was a solid sheet of ice at The Dalles.
