Description
Summary:Halibut Season Opens March 15. Halibut Season Opens March 15 Busy scenes soon will be enacted at Fishermen's Dock, Salmon Bay, where Seattle's huge fleet of halibut vessels has been in snug moorings for the winter. Fishermen will be overhauling gear and many craft will be preparing for the banks. The International Fisheries Commission has set March 15 at midnight for the opening of the 1937 season and much work must be done before the fleet heads north. Approximately 1,500 halibut fishermen manning 200 vessels will take part in the exodus. First units of the fleet will go to Portlock, Yakutat and Albatross banks in Southwestern Alaska. They will be followed by vessels that fish in Hecate Strait, along the west coast of Vancouver Island and off Cape Flattery. Last year the first craft of the halibut fleet to leave for the fishing grounds passed through the Lake Washington ship canal March 5.
