Description
Summary:Oregon Piling Shipments The Heaviest Since 1922. Oregon Piling Shipments The Heaviest Since 1922 PORTLAND, Ore.—Not since 1922 has Oregon moved so much piling to eastern points as is now under way. Shipping is expected to continue , iitil well Into November, says the Association of American Rail- Since the first of the year, car- loadings of piling from the Oregon territory have been double those for the corresponding period in 1936. It is expected that 5000 more cars will be needed this year, with about 1600 being loaded and moved each month. Piling, some of which necessitates the employment of three flat cars to transport, is being loaded in the vicinity of Eugene, Ore., to the 1939 World's Fair in New York and many other consigness along the Great Lakes and the North Atlantic coast, as well as for United States Government purposes. When the heavy requirements for flat cars became acute, the Southern Pacific Railroad called upon the car service division of the association for assistance. This central co-ordinating organization provded 1000 additional steel-underframe "flats" for use where most needed. Some of the cars obtained were so scattered throughout the ^country that they were rounded up as far East as Baltimore. Md. and Harrisburg. Penna. This is an example of how competing rail companies today cooperate when faced with a .major transportation problem.'
