| Summary: | Alaska To Get Seattle Elk ALASKA 10 GET SEATTLE ELK-- Alaska, world-famous as a hunt er's paradise abounding with al manner of wild animals, turned tc Seattle today to select her elk fron Woodland Park Zoo! Alaska sportsmen, seeking elk tc Stock Revilla Island, on which Ketchikan is located, negotiated ar agreement with the Seattle Park Board by which surplus elk from the zoo will be traded for a varietj of Alaskan animals and birds. The request for elk was made to the board by Homer Jewell, resident Seattle warden of the Alaska Game Commission, acting for the Alaska Sportsmen's Association. "I have visited your zoo," Mr. Jewell told the board, "and I find you haven't many Alaskan animals or birds. If we may have the elk, our sportsmen have agreed to send you kodiak and grizzly bear, red foxes, martins, wolverines, eagles, magpies and jays." Dr. Gus L. Knudson, zoo director, said the city has several surplus elk that can be given the Alaskans. Jewell recalled that in 1926 the Park Board gave Alaskans several elk, and that these few animals, placed on Afognak Island, have multiplied to 100. He said elk thrive there and predicted that in a few generations these elk will be the largest species in the world.
