Description
Summary:Record Grizzly Falls To Prospectors's Gun RECORD GRIZZLY FALLS TO PROSPECTOR'S GUN KETCHIKAN, Alaska, Nov. 30. (AP)—A huge grizzly bear, known as "Old Groaner," fell before the fire of a Unuk river prospector, Bruce Johnstone, whom he charged recently while Johnstone worked a mining claim. Johnstone had but three cartridges in his rifle. He fired once from the hip, striking the grizzly in the shoulder and then pumped two more bullets into the animal's head. The prospector brought the skull to Ketchikan where sportsmen, pronouncing it one of the largest on record, learned the reason the grizzly groaned. They found imbedded in the bone an old rifle bullet and the scars of another. The grizzly's teeth were in bad condition, indicating great age. Measurements showed the skull to be 17 inches across by 11 inches.
