Summary:Musk Oxen Make Isle Life Tough MUSK OXEN MAKE ISLE LIFE TOUGF SEATTLE, Nov. 20. (AP)—Turn- about's fair play in the Arctic. Eskimos exterminated the las herd of native Alaskan musk o> in 1865, near Point Barrow, I Captain Isak Lystad, Bering l._ mariner, brought word today that musk oxen transplanted to Nuni- vak island are trying to exterminate the Eskimos. He said that, far from pining for their native "Greenland's icy moun-i tains," the herd of about 30 bulls, cows and calves has become thoroughly and savagely acclimated and has taken almost complete: possession of the island. Asks for Fencing. Captain Lystad's little motorship, The Boxer, brought a letter, written by the Nunivak school teacher, Arthur Nagozruk, asking Uncle Sam to please send a stout wire fence to enclose the Nash harbor village. The captain told of how Nunivak islander was self rooned, hip-deep, in a lake whole day while a musk ox paced the shore, daring him to come out. Other natives finally discovered his plight, distracted the ox's attention and helped the Eskimo escape. Captain Lystad said the terrorized Eskimos complained the oxen invaded their settlements, gored and trampled their tethered dogs to death and chased the natives of the treeless island into the surf.
