Fort Yukon, Alaska, on the upper Yukon, reported 71 below zero today, lowest December reading in the recorded history of the 61-year-old trading post. Fairbanks' 59 degrees below zero last night equaled its previous December record of 1912. All readings were from official government thermometers. At Nome, on the Bering sea coast, the mercury was comparatively high, registering zero. This fact, coupled with the abnormally low reading inland indicated here that the intense icold wave was coming straight from, tthe north pole.
