Sacramento shivered as the mercury dropped to 28 degrees above zero, the coldest since 1888. It was equal to the day's thermometer reading at Point Barrow, northernmost point of the American continent, far above "A rare importation of cold air from Canada and Alaska caused by a peculiar wind current, was the explanation of Major E. H. Bowie, weather bureau meteorologist here. Californians, even far to the south, agreed it was "very rare" as they buttoned up overcoats with numb fingers.
