Tt San Francisco police broke through a blockade of union pickets surrounding the S. S. American Star, scheduled to sail for Bristol bay today and escorted several truckloads of workers aboard the Union Recognition Sought Pickets, seeking to prevent sailing1 of the vessel until their demands f or a $75 monthly wage are met, let the trucks through without protest. Pickets blockaded pier 20 where the S. S. Glacier also was preparing to sa.il for Alaskan fishing grounds. The picket lines appeared when operators of fish canneries who own or lease the vessels refused to recognize the newly-organized Alaska Cannery Workers union, an American Federation of Labor affiliate. Most of the pickets and the workers who were sent through the picket lines last night are Orientals. Ferry Workers Out At Seattle, striking ferryboat crews prepared to return to work following an appeal by Gov. Clarence D. Martin. The governor requested the workers, employed on the Seattle-Bremerton ferries, to return to work un- arbitration board can act on union demands. The crews of the ferry Kalakala struck Saturday afternoon, protesting against working 15 hours a day as required under a new schedule put into effect Friday. The crew of the Chippewa walked off a few hours later in sympathy.
