Summary:Emergency Ship Off For Alaska EMERGENCY SHIP OFF FOR ALASKA First Break in Strike Tieup on Coast Reported SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 1 (CAP)— The government-chartered steamer Arctic started for Alaska today in the role of an emergency ship, marking the first break in the month-old shipping tieup, while maritime union leaders pressed their new campaign for an "inland march" in support of their strike. New strike calls brought marine firemen and ship radio telegraphers Into the east-coast shipping walkout, and a few more warehousemen, affiliates of the longshoremen, left their jobs here. President Bridges of the Pacific Coast International Longshoremen's association, and Harry Lundeberg, secretary-treasurer of the Pacific Sailors' union, awaited the arrival of the Arctic in Seattle and made plans to continue their series of speeches seeking inland backing. Before a mass meeting last night Bridges announced that the longshoremen would enter politics and would continue their "ever-widening inland march until every port is 100 per cent union." In the face of police threats to arrest pickets stopping vehicles, the truck drivers' union began an organization campaign in the Los Angeles harbor area. Scores of special officers were called to patrol waterfront thoroughfares.
