Description
Summary:Barrow Food Ship Esacapes Ice Park Barrow Food Ship Escapes Ice Pack BARROW, Alaska, Tuesday, Sept. 8.—(AP)—The feared Arctic ice pack, aided by early snow, wind and freezing temperature, endangered the motorship North Star of Seattle today, and forced the vessel eastward and away from Barrow. The North Star, a Bureau of Indian Affairs ship, was sent to Barrow with food supplies for Eskimos reported starving east of here. Provisions were being unloaded when a strong, cold westerly wind swept over the Arctic Ocean, holding the ice along the coast and forcing the ship to seek shelter further east. The ship made one attempt to return to Barrow, but heavy ice forced her to retreat. Natives said indications were for an early freeze and that if the ! westerly wind held there was a likelihood the ship's return course would be blocked.
