(AP)— The Indian service received word today that its vessel North Star, with a cargo of teachers ready to "hole in" for ,a winter's stay in remote Eskimo villages, had arrived safely at Point Barrow. Officials, anxious lest the boat be blocked off from the land by the ice pack, hailed the news as assurance the young Eskimos would be able to continue their education through the long winter night. Teacher Missed Boat.-- There'll be 08 school for the 20 children at Galena, however, because their teacher "missed the boat." The man hired for the job got sick just before the boat left Seattle, and it was too late to hire another, officials explained. Maybe the children won't mind, but. the grown-ups may miss the white man who yearly acts as teacher to the young, adviser to the grown-ups, town financial expert, medical aide, dispute-settler and arbiter of family troubles. The teachers, with small radiotelephone sets, also become part of the network of reporters who give aviators of the waste lands their only check on weather conditions of the far north. j Two Indian service boats are scattering their freight of new teachers along the northern coast of Alaska. The recruits will become part of an army of 200 white and native teachers assigned to 100 snow-locked Eskimo villages each year. They get only $1800 a year, but the work is interesting.
