Summary:Beach Gold Boat Sunk Years Ago Beach Gold Boat Sunk Years Ago ___________________________________ JUNEAU, Alaska, May 3. (AP)-- Mild spring weather has hastened salvaging of the gold ship Islander, which sank August 15, 1901, carrying gold estimated at from $3000,000 to $3,000,000, in Stephens passage near here. Seventy-two lives were lost at the time. The vessel, bound for Vancouver, B.C., from Skagway with Klondike miners, was believed to have hit an iceberg. The wrck was originally in 324 feet of water but is now in only 65 feet. Frank Curtis of Seattle, who last year directed moving of the wreck to its present position, renewed operations about three weeks ago with an enlarged crew of 32 men, two large convereted ships, the steam tug Georgia, a gas boat and considerable machinery and other equipment, now anchored over the islander. Curtis expected to beach the gold boat with two lift ships.
