Description
Summary:Alaska Sea Men On Ocean Gold. ALASKA SEA MEN ON OCEAN GOLD Known widely as an explorer and navigator, Captain John C. Benson, who is preparing to leave for the arctic in the Gold King, 202-foot power ship, will be heard at a meeting of the stockholders of the Offshore Gold Dredging company in the Old Silver Grill of the Spokane hotel at 7:30 p. m. today. "Captain Benson is of the old school in which records and reputations were carved out of the snow and ice by physical strength and spiritual fortitude," says Leon Starmont, executive vice president. "Not since Amundsen have Spokane people met a man of this type and achievement." Another speaker will be Captain John Finch, a deep-sea diver, who mined gold with suction pumps in the ocean off Nome beach 30 years ago through six feet of ice at 40 degrees below zero, says Starmont. He will supervise the submarine diving activities on the Gold King. Attendance at the meeting will be by invitations, of which 500 have been issued. The officers are Captain Benson, president, Nome, Alaska; Mr. Starmont, vice president; Walter C. Clark, second vice president, Kellogg, Idaho; Wellman A. Clark, secretary; W. L. Kimmel, treasurer, and Robert T. Banks, director, Spokane.
