Description
Summary:Ceremonial work is being done here in the Big House of Chemainus First Nation, recognizing the Chemainus First Nation hosts, the cultural leaders, chief and the chief's wife. With them is Chief Frank Nelson of the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk Tribe of Kingcome Inlet. Initially the invitation for the 2004 paddle was made by Chief Frank Nelson to Kingcome Inlet. It was later changed to Chemainus, the home of his wife's family. Images in this collection document the Nisqually Indian Tribe's participation in the Tribal Canoe Journeys, an annual celebration of canoe culture by Coast Salish peoples from British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington. In 2004, the event was known as the "Paddle to Chemainus," hosted by the Stz'uminus First Nation.
