Summary: | The Canadian Coast Guard and Finnish Board of Navigation established a joint research project "JRPA #6, Propeller / ice Interaction" in 1991, which had as its aim the development of a new propefier/ice interaction model. The ultimate goal was to use the model as basis in formulating new machinery regulations for Arctic and Baltic ice conditions. The new model was to be based on the theoretical analysis of the physical phenomena involved, and of existing full scale measurements. The aim was to create a model that is applicable to the practical dimensioning of propellers and shafts against ice loads. The basic share of work was that the main responsibility for developing a contact load model was in Finland, whereas the responsibility for developing a model for hydrodynamic loads was in Canada. These two elements were synthesised in a comprehensive propeller load prediction model (simulation model). In addition, a simplified propeller ice load model (design load model) was constructed.
