Summary:To find a solution for the harmful effects of a cold climate upon pavement, test construction was carried out in Kilpisjarvi, Northern Finland. The road was located in an open tundra terrain with snowdrifts and snow accumulation conditions. The approach was based upon elevating the pavement level above the estimated highest level of snow surface, and on forming the road section to minimize turbulent wind effects that may cause accumulation. The road was rebuilt in the summer of 1987. After construction, snow plowing proved to be necessary for about three months longer than before the repair. Snow fences, which were needed previously, could be removed.
