Summary:On 3 October 1999 a live hooded seal Cystophora cristata was found at the beach of Knokke-Heist, Belgium. The animal was a young, approximately 6 months old male. It was taken to the seal rehabilitation centre of National Sea Life Blankenberge. The animal will be released in the North Sea in early 2000. The hooded seal is very rare in the southern North Sea. This is the second record in Belgium, the first case being a one year old female that was caught in inland waters in March 1987.
