Description
Summary:The basketshell Corbula gibba is recorded for the first time in Belgian coastal waters. The species is present in the harbour of Zeebrugge. The specimens were adult but rather small, less than 1 cm. Some juveniles where also found. A striking feature was the colour of the shells beeing brightly pink/red. In other aspects they resemble the variety rosea (Brown). In the Zeebrugge harbour the conditions are brackish. Other molluscs living there are e.g. Cerastoderma glaucum, Petricola pholadiformis, Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas . The bottom was well suited for Corbula gibba consisting of fine sand with mud but also with shell fragments and peat, suitable for the byssal attachment needed by Corbula gibba .
