Summary:Research techniques of the Russian-German-Lithuanian relations in the Baltic region during the Middle Ages have a longstanding tradition in historiography. Methods of interpretation of the problem evolved from the «Drang nach Osten» – concept to the modern approaches, which put the cultural contacts into the primary focus of a study. However, many specific episodes of the political history of the region remain unexplored. This study is aiming to analyses one of the episodes of Russian-German-Lithuanian relations, in particular the military conflict at the Livonian borders in the 1340s. Material and methods. The study is based on a broad range of sources, including chronicles of Pskov and Novgorod, chronicles of the Teutonic Order, diplomatic sources, monuments of medieval chivalrous poetry. This article focuses on the military aspects of the Russian-German-Lithuanian relations and the analysis of the diversity of the military forms of this conflict. Therefore, the latter can hardly be narrowed to any single distinctive feature. Findings and their discussion. September 9, 1341 five ambassadors from Pskov were killed in a border incident. The consequences of the incident resulted in a war between Pskov and Livonia. Subsequent events led to the escalation of the conflict. Principality of Vitebsk and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a whole, the Novgorod Republic, the Teutonic Order, the Swedish Kingdom and other countries of the Baltic region were dragged into this conflict. Military actions continued until the late 1340s and having acquired a great response in Europe were reflected in Austrian monuments of chivalrous poetry. Conclusion. Through the analysis the escalation of the conflict from the border incidents to a major war that has engulfed the whole Baltic Region has been reconstructed. In addition, the systematic approach to the different types of military conflicts in the Middle Ages was proposed in a particular example.
