He studied law and taught Greek and Latin. Edmond Meany (1862-1935) is considered one of the founding fathers of the University of Washington. Meany graduated as valedictorian in 1885 from the University of Washington where he studied botany. Meany went on to become a journalist and was involved in Washington politics. In 1893 he joined the University of Washington’s board of Regents and consequentially made a deep impact on the trajectory of the school. He instated university traditions such as Campus Day and lobbied for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition to be held at campus.
