Description
Summary:On verso of image: U.S. Revenue Cutter "Thetis" and S.S. "Corwin" at Unalaska dock. The USS Thetis was a three-masted, wooden-hulled steam whaler built 1881 in the United States Navy and later in the Revenue Cutter Service. In the spring of 1899, she was transferred temporarily to the United States Revenue Cutter Service for special duty transporting Siberian reindeer to Alaska. She spent the next 16 years cruising Alaskan waters on law-enforcement duties and transporting supplies. SS Corwin, built 1877, was burned in drydock 1916. Originally named the Thomas Corwin, she was the first revenue cutter to regularly cruise the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Sold and renamed the Corwin in 1900, she continued operating in the Bering Sea as a merchant and charter vessel.
