Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Edwin F. Brotze. Dr. Edmund Marburg Rininger (1870-1912) was born in Schellburg, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Kansas and Ohio. He attended medical school at Marion Sims Medical College in St. Louis, Missouri, from which he graduated in 1893. In 1897, he went to Alaska to set up a drug store and hospital in Sheep's Camp. He then went to Dawson by way of Chilkoot Pass. However, he could not practice medicine in Canada, and began prospecting, locating claim No. 11 above Bonanza Creek. In 1899, he left Dawson for Nome to practice medicine. There, he built Providence Hospital which was later taken over by Providence Sisters. In 1904 he came to Washington and received a license to practice medicine there. He was married to Eleanor Powers with whom he had one child.
