Summary:Spokane, Washington, United States · Myrtle DeFriel was interviewed for a class project for Professor Karen J. Blair's Women's Studies 290A course at the University of Washington. DeFriel was born in Spokane in 1893 but spent most of her life in the Seattle area. DeFriel speaks of her childhood in Seattle, mentioning the Klondike Gold Rush and life on Yesler Way. She describes how people in Seattle used to watch for the ships from Prefontaine Hill arriving from the Klondike and about the many gambling places and brothels along the waterfront. She talks about Mayor Hiram Gill, the Yesler Cable car and a visit to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, as well as her time as a housewife and the lives of her children and grandchildren. She briefly speaks of her job during World War II and shares her thoughts on feminism and the Women's Movement.
