| Summary: | Caption on image: Fort-Wrangle, Alaska. Nowell, Photo. 1171 The town of Wrangell is located on the north coast of Wrangell Island in the Alexander Archipelago. It began as a stockade built by the Russians occupying the island in 1834. In 1839, the Russians leased part of southeast Alaska to the British. When the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, a military post, called Fort Wrangell, was established. Fort Wrangel post office was established in 1869 and changed to Wrangell in 1902. Because of its location, Wrangell became an important supply point for fur traders and miners beginning with the Stikine gold rush in 1861.
