He was the first "Géographe du Roi" in France under Louis XIV in 1678. Considered one of the most important French cartographers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Jaillot's major work began in 1669 when he partnered with the sons of Nicolas Sanson and revised and newly engraved Sanson's maps. Many of these maps were compiled in to the often re-printed "Atlas Nouveau" (1674). Other works by Jaillot include "map of Spain" (1688), re-issue of Blaeu's "wall map Africa," "Plan of Jerusalem" (1678), marine charts in "Le Neptune Francois" (1693) and "Atlas Francois" (1694), and "map of Palestine" (1697) (Tooley, 331; Moreland and Bannister, 129). This map was first published in "Atlas Noveau" and was based on a map by Guillaume Sanson. Source(s): Moreland, Carl and David Bannister. "Antique Maps: A Collector's Handbook."
