Arrows indicating direction of trade winds included throughout shaded portion of Atlantic and Pacific Oceans between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Written in pencil in upper left corner above cartouche: ”#25.” Depicts North America, Central America including the West Indies and South America. Also visible are a part of western Africa and Spain as well as the Azores and Canary Islands. Shows islands in the South Pacific Ocean including the Solomon Islands. Of note, the northwestern portion of North America is labeled as “Parts Undiscovered” and is left blank. A note on the outline of part of the northwest coast of North America is shown with the note, “The Supposed Straits of Annian.” North of California is a region labeled “New Albion.” Other regions shown in North America include Prince William’s Land, Greenland, Labrador or New Britain, Canada, the Great Lakes, Hudson’s Bay, part of Baffin’s Bay, New France, Louisiana, Carolina, Georgia, Florida, New Scotland, Acadia, New Jersey, New England, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Mexico is shown as Mexico or New Spain. South America has been divided into Terra Firma, Peru, Brazil, Chili, Terra Magellanica, Patagonia, Guayra, and Country Amazones. Contains some notes on geographical discoveries. Surrounding the title cartouche is a scene depicting natives in traditional dress, a bird, two monkeys and a crocodile. In the background is a faint image of European settlers. Scale: c.a. 1:35,000,000 - 50,000,000. Emanuel Bowen (ca. 1720-1767) was an English engraver, printseller and publisher. He lived and worked in London. From 1714 onward, he created some of the "best and most attractive maps of the century" (Moreland and Bannister, 166). He was engraver to George II of England and Louis XV of France. However, he died in poverty and had lost most of his vision. His work includes "Asia" (1714), "World" (1717), "Cusco" (1720), "Britannia Depicta" (1720), maps for John Harris's "Navigantium Atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca, or A Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels" (1744-48), "The Large English Atlas" with Thomas Kitchin (1755-1760), and "America" (1763) (Tooley, 74; Moreland and Bannister, 166).
