Description
Summary:The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE) was a world's fair held in Seattle to publicize the development of the Pacific Northwest. The fairgrounds were located on the campus of the University of Washington. This image of a large crowd was taken at the Natural Amphitheater at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle on Swedish Day, July 31, 1909. Professor Adolph Edgren, a prominent local musician and educator, was chosen as the day's Music Director in Chief. In addition to various musical ensembles performed by the Edgren School of Music and the Grand Swedish Jubilee Choir, Professor Edgren composed several pieces for the Exposition, including "Jubel Kantat," "A Hearty Cheer for Arctic Brotherhood," and "Greeting to Alaska Pioneers." The Arctic Brotherhood Building is visible on the hill behind the crowd. Frank H. Nowell (1864-1950) was the official photographer of the AYPE, and his photographs were displayed at the fair and used in many official publications. 1 glass negative: b&w; 8 x 10 in.
