| Summary: | 1898 James D. Lowman (1856-1947) and Clarence Hanford (1857-1920) founded Lowman & Hanford Stationery and Printing Company in 1882. The firm advertised as booksellers, stationers, printers, and binders but also sold typewriters, sewing machines, pianos, and organs. Later they expanded into selling photographic equipment and other supplies to people leaving for the gold fields. The company existed in one form or another until the 1960s. This Lowman & Hanford map of Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territories highlights the recent discoveries of gold, with inset maps for the Klondike Mining District and the area near Skagway (spelled "Skaguay"). The map was drawn by Richard H. Stretch (1837-1926), a well-known civil and mining engineer who helped plat West Seattle, was active in the Alaska Bureau for the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, and designed the route for the White Pass and Yukon Railway. The map has a hand drawn route marking an arrival in Dutch Harbor on June 9, 1898, and moving on to Selawik Lake and up and down the Kobuk (marked as "Kowak") River until the end of August. The journey ends with a note about staying in one location from late August, 1898 through March 21, 1899.
