Summary:The "Maud" was Roald Amundsen's (1872-1928) vessel for his groundbreaking Northeast Passage, or Northern Route, in which he navigated the ship through ice-blocked waters from the coast of Siberia to Seattle, Washington. This colorized photograph shows the ship anchored in Portage Bay. The Norwegian explorer was most famous for his Antarctic expedition of 1910-1912 when they were the first to reach the South Pole in 1911.
