Description
Summary:This slide shows the release of radioactivity from the processing plants at Mayak Chelyabinsk going into the Techa River that ran into the Arctic Ocean. The vertical scale on this plot is the release of radioactivity that is on a logarithmic scale in Curies per day. The very intense emissions in 1950-1951 were probably in the order of 6-10 million Curies per day release of radiation. This was dumped directly from the processing plants into the Techa River. It was dumped from the 1940s up until 1956 when they stopped dumping it into the river. The data comes from the Russian reports and my friend that I ran into, Vladimir Nazarozv, who actually drove those trucks as a young man to the river and dumped the radiation in. He told me they were dump trucks that they had lined with tarps. They would just put the radioactive waste into the dump trucks and then he would drive them to the river. The radiation would be dumped directly in, and from that river, it would run into the Arctic Ocean.
