Description
Summary:This slide was taken by one of my students who was at the South Pole station because I am in the picture. I am at the geographic South Pole itself. This is a place that was put up for visitors to come and get your picture. This was estimated to be within a meter or two of the actual geographic South Pole. They obtain satellite data to locate it and then came down and surveyed on the ground to locate its exact location. It was believed to be within a few feet of this location, but remember we’re on 11,000 feet of ice. And that ice is shifting all the time. But they had a barber pole they put up there, and they have a silver fish bowl. This is obtained from New Zealand. Apparently a couple of the aircrews went to a barber shop and sold the barber pole, and then they went to an aquarium and bought a fish bowl and then silvered the inside of it using formaldehyde and silver nitrite, which is an old chemical technique that is used. But this was at the local South Pole itself. And you’ll notice I have my coat open even though it’s quite cold out. It’s approximately 20 below zero at this time, but, again, you’re in the bright sunshine. You will be squinting if you don’t have dark glasses on, and I can look and see that I am squinting in this place. But everybody comes out to get their pictures taken by the South Pole itself.
