Description
Summary:This shows one of the scientists down there. The scientists all wore red coats so we could be identified from other people. The two people back by the South Pole itself are two military. They had more brownish or khaki-type coats. But the red ones are more for the scientists. I took this picture to show how, when you have a beard and mustache, it’ll ice up from your breath. Your breath just goes on it and freezes, and you’ll get big chunks of ice. It’s dangerous to try to break those chunks off, because quite often you’ll pull off some of your beard or mustache at the same time. So it’s easier just to let them start melting off and then dripping the water down. It’s kind of a foolish thing, but everybody likes to grow a beard or mustache to try to keep warm down there. But it makes a real nice trap for your breath, as it freezes. The temperature out when these pictures were taken was probably about minus 30 degrees Celsius.
