Wrangell is well known as a center for totem poles in Southeastern Alaska. It may be reached by flying Pacific Northern Airlines from Seattle-Tacoma to Ketchikan and then Alaska Coastal-Ellis to Wrangell. Clifford 653 Chief Shakes Historic Site is located in Wrangell Alaska and contains a replica of an early 19th century Tlingit community house and several totem poles. This was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps project in the 1940s meant to preserve indigenous artwork in Alaska.
