The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 and built Army and Navy bases on Kodiak during World War II. These military bases created a population boom on the island and it was incorporated in 1940. Kodiak has experienced many natural disasters including a 1912 eruption of Mt Katmai volcano and an earthquake and tidal wave in 1964. |
