Description
Summary:The Great War of the early 20th century brought with it the first major migration crisis in Europe. Shattered cities, razed fields and thousands of people forced to flee their own homes escaping war, persecution and famine. The Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen, hand in hand with the League of Nations, worked tirelessly to find a solution for this problem. From his hard work came the so-called Nansen Passport which was the first document that ensured international protection for refugees who crossed European borders in search of asylum. Today, such a passport seems more alive than ever in the face of the great migration crisis affecting Europe since 2015. Along these lines, this article aims to present the Nansen Passport, on one hand, as a solution for Europe and, on the other hand, as the most effective means of rapairing the deficiencies presented by the European Union's migration policy.
