Summary:As seen by an earthbound observer that rotates with the earth, objects that move without friction on its ellipsoidal surface are subject to the Coriolis force, which produces oscillatory motions called inertial oscillations. This project analyzes inertial oscillations that pass through the North Pole using a perturbation expansion in the velocity amplitude. The frequency of small-amplitude oscillations is found to be twice the frequency of the Earth’s rotation.
