Summary:The San Francisco Peaks Research Natural Area (hereafter referred to as the SFPRNA or the Natural Area) was established in 1935. It reserves, for future study, representative alpine and subalpine communities in northern Arizona. One of the original criteria for selecting the present location of the SFPRNA was to protect a representative sample of bristlecone pines (Pinus aristata). These trees occur nowhere else in the state of Arizona except on the San Francisco Peaks. Within the Natural Area are nearly pure stands of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and bristlecone pine, and a small portion of the only alpine tundra in Arizona. This study defines the plant communities within the Natural Area and includes a checklist of the vascular plants growing within its boundaries (appendix A). This will provide baseline information for all future research done on the San Francisco Peaks Research Natural Area.
