Thank you all for the service you have given your community. We will be featuring two of our residents weekly, so that you may become better acquainted with them. This week we salute Wallace Cook (better know to us as Andy) Andy was born on July 10, 1909 in Magrath. He was born to Thomas & Manette. Andy had a pretty large family, with 5 brothers-7 sisters. I don't think I'd want to do the dishes after supper around their house. His brothers were: Clyde, Leo, Garth, Dean, Marian. Sisters Fay, Edith, Blanch, Avilda, Muriel, Mirdel, Roxey. Andy lived around this area all his life, farming around Raymond, and Cardston area. Andy has been very active all his life. He enjoys walking for exercise. He used to love to play baseball, fish & skate. One of the things that I didn't know about Andy is that he loves to travel. He has been to Hawaii five times, he has really travelled. He has visited England, Scotland, Wales, United States. Andy is a real joy to have at the Terrace, he participates in everything, and what a dart player he is. He is always there to help others. I wish I could be as committed as Andy to walking every day. I see him most mornings walking when I'm on my way to work, and I guess that is what makes him so youthful looking. Gladys Workman was born in Cardston. Her parents were Tina Anderson from Sweden & Thomas Leishman from Scotland. Gladys had 3 sisters named Ruth, Bernice & Kathrine. She was married for 31 yrs. to Ivan G. Workman. They were married in the Cardston Temple. Glayds had 3 boys, Mark, Tom & Gail. Her daughters are Deana & Pam. Gladys was raised in Glenwood, & later moved to Hill Spring when she got married. She loves to read & embroider. She told me that she used to do a lot of sewing with her machine, along with gardening-especially flowers Gladys is a very nice person to have around. She just goes with the flow, always a friendly smile to make you feel good. I can always count on Gladys to play cards, & come out to almost all activities. She plays bingo & bowls regularly Michael Harker has been called to serve in the Australia Melbourne Mission, his farewell will be held on Sunday Aug. I at 11:00 a.m., Magrath Stake Center. COME AND JOIN IN ON THE FUN! Centennial Sensational I would like to offer appreciation for the fantastic job done by the town council, centennial committees and hundreds of volunteers who made this celebration so spectacular. I’d like to add my voice to the many who felt this was the best celebration the town has ever hosted. What a great Bike and Run event with over 60 enthusiastic participants! The shirts they proudly wear prove all were winners. Thanks Rod Ririe and committee. The hour long parade was easily the best Magrath has ever had. The amazing participation by so many groups, families and businesses was overwhelming. We think it was way better than Lethbridge’s because they had fewer floats by groups . Tom Redd’s children’s variety races were a high point-so much happy participation. The petting zoo and the Astro Jump drew a huge crowd. The wide variety of events through the afternoon had something for everyone. Hopefully many of the additions will become part of future events. I don’t know how anyone could have attended everything- along with the myriad of reunions. However the community band concert was such a wonderful new innovation- a chance for all former band members and many out of towners who joined in at the last made for a wonderful musical reunion we all appreciated. What a great idea! How can one comment adequately on the program, The Power Of The Dream, brainchild of Marilyn Henderson and Shirley Perry. It took a full year of planning and preparation and was completely professional. They had gone to great lengths to bring back some special people, including Dow’s Rhythmers- a real trip down memory lane and honoring Boyd Hunter and Steve Brockway- former band leaders who have contributed so significantly along with Jerry Chatwin to the music in Magrath. If you were among the capacity crowd who filled the Tom Karren 20 minutes after the door was open or the many who saw the videoed program in the overflow at the LDS stake center you already know about the polished snappy performances which delighted the crowd. This program involved 80 performers and members of two bands and two choruses, bringing the total to well over 200 performers. A few comments from behind the scenes. The mural- masterminded by local artist Gary Heaton was a beautiful composite of old and new Magrath landmarks. Hopefully it can be preserved. Assisting painters who worked for months included Dari Cook, Debbie Cook, Wendy Harris, Marilyn Henderson, Ilona Schneyder, Diane Stanford, Ann Pilling, Joanne Wocknitz, Linda Bourelle and Shirley Perry. Decorations were by Jackie Barnett and Kathy Dahl and helpers. Dance Coordinators Elizabeth strong and Terry Clifton were tireless and produced fantastic results. The cake took three weeks to construct, paint and decorate. A cake nine feet tall and 12 feet in diameter was a fitting focus for the program. Brian Johnson, Randy Harker, Karen Chipman, Coleen Keeler, and 4th Ward Young Womens know a lot about the hours involved. The incredible scene of former buildings of Magrath was drawn by Gary Heaton with a talented committee of women who painted them- it took about'three months to do even with all the help. Hopefully it can be preserved for many others to enjoy. Can you imagine Wes Murphy Mark Dudley Jim Anderson, Moyle Pilling and Steven DeWinter successfully setting up and running 19 mikes for the occasion. It remarkably improved the sound - thanks to untiring fund raising efforts of the elementary school council and a host of helpers. Still a few bugs but much better! Bonny West Cynthia Harris, Mary Ann Johnson made slides from Duane and Carma Thomson’s book which greatly added to the show. Programs were by Todd and Shauna Jones. James and Shaun Perry. Brandon Henderson and Mason Dahl kept the show moving with their behind the scenes quick changes. Can you imagine serving 3200 hungry holidayers beef on a bun, pop and birthday cake? Vince and Heather Harker and Committee have first hand knowledge plus a hustling committee- they were amazing. Weren’t the fireworks and bonfire great! It made all those from Magrath and the many others who wished they were very proud. Thanks.
