Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents LCC GRADUATION A MOTHER'S LOVE The Lethbridge Community College held its Convocation Ceremony Friday, April 30, 1993 with several Magrath students graduating. These include Shelley Bly Heaton, Kimberly Doreen Holland, Shauna Marie Taylor, Jack Alvin Bengry, Morgan Bruce Kearl, Thomas E. Cahoon, Carmen Heilinga, Cameron Duane Bruce, Neil Bly, and Robert John Weing. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION 1993 The community is invited to the 1993 Graduation Exercises to be held in the Karren Gym on Friday, May 21 at 8:00 p.m. This years theme is "A World To Win" and the guest speaker will be Mr. Phil Toilestrup. The valedictorian is Barbie Leavitt. She has the highest average in grade 12 after considering scores in English 30, Math 30, Social 30, a level 30 Science, and one other level 30 course. A dance will be held in the auditorium following the exercises. TOWN OF MAGRATH STREET OILING The town will again be reworking and oiling all previously oiled roads and we ask for the patience and understanding of those who will be effected by this program. If any property owner objects to this project, please submit your concerns in writing to the Town Office before May 15, 1993. If sufficient petition 'against’ is received from individual streets, and residents are prepared to deal with the summer dust and mud, we will exclude that area from the program. A Mother's love is something that no one can explain, It is made of deep devotion and sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may For nithing can destroy it or take that love away. It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking. It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems. It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation. The objective of the Society is to assist mentally handicapped adults to receive necessary and desired services in their own community. S.A.S.H. provides access to services such as day programs, vocational programs, residential options, recreational opportunities, transportation, and other services that are needed. S.A.S.H. provides a day program for five clients, vocational programs for twelve clients, and residential programs for 10 clients. The Vocational Program consists of the preparation and serving of lunches at the Magrath School and the Raymond North side Elementary School, as well as housecleaning, lawn mowing, yard maintenance at Stafford Lake Park. S.A.S.H. also operates a Commercial Kitchen six nights a week, specializing in pizzas, chicken fingers, fries, etc. With the help received from the Catholic Charities, clients from the vocational programs receive training in the Commercial Kitchen, where they receive a regular wage for the time worked. The Residential Program assists clients residing in Lethbridge, Raymond, and Magrath to live independently in their communities close to family and friends. The Society is governed by eight Board Members, who meet monthly to discuss policies and programs. S.A.S.H. has a staff of ten full time employees, with casual and part time employees being used as needed. The support received from the community is greatly appreciated. The many volunteers who have helped i staffing bingo events in Lethbridge have made it possible to acquire a new fifteen passenger van for client transportation. The programs at S.A.S.H. are recognized as being some of the best in the area for the care of the handicapped. The staff are dedicated, trained personnel, willing to go the extra mile for the benefit of the clients. We feel that our success is directly related to our staff, board members, and the support received from the community. ******* SENIORS NEWS Our Wednesday lunches for May will be held on the 5th, 12th, and 19th of this month at 6:00 p.m. in the Seniors Centre. Everyone come and enjoy good and good THE QUILTING CORNER PATTERNS The sky is the limit, even a pattern to resemble clouds can be quilted and is very pleasing to the eye. Applique patterns are popular, as are roses, tulips, or lilies. These flowers can be assembled with complimentary leaves, diagonal lines, or scallops and when quilted can be very beautiftil. A few standard patterns such as a log cabin, a wedding ring, a lake pattern and many more are still used and very lovely. In recent years heritage quilts have been given special attention. The outline of children's hands and feet with their names and birthdates embroidered are a treasure now and in the future. Many women with special talents have created their own designs taken from their nationality or profession. These too make a special quilt. Western motifs of horseshoes, boats, spurs, etc. are pleasing patterns, especially to those who have spent their lifetime with livestock. Japanese giesha girls, silhouettes of fans, and flowers also make a reminder of the Japanese heritage. Every nationality has their own flowers and art which can be traced as a pattern and then quilted. Star patterned quilt tops are a great deal of work to assemble, but when quilted are very pretty. Many of the relitives and friends of Olive Bradshaw enjoy star quilts in their homes. Yes, the sky is the limit.
