Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents WEDNESDAY Augusti6,1995 SAFER TANNING TIME ARRIVES!! Skin Cancer scare ends for another year. Good news for sun worshippers: the prime moment for a cancer-causing burn this summer has passed. Dangers still lurk out there, but sunbathers can spend more time soaking up the rays before they have to slip into the shade. The Earth's rotation has shifted the angle of the sunlight reaching Canada to a less punishing degree, enabling the layer of ozone overhead to do a better job of filtering out the sun's ultra-violent rays. Canada has been taking ozone measurements since 1948, and has run the World Ozone Data Centre for the World Meteorological Centre since the early 1960's. In 1985 a large hole in the layer was discovered over Antarctica and scientists became concerned. Several factors can affect the layer's thickness. Chemical emissions from manmade products have eroded the ozone. Although these are restricted in several countries, they live on in the stratosphere & they will continue to do damage for some time. However, Mother Nature deserves some of the blame. Natural factors such as the angle of the sun, the season & presence of clouds will modify the effect in the ozone thickness. Smoke from many forest fires this year has polluted the atmosphere but also acted as a filter in some places, temporarily reducing the barrage of ultraviolet rays. Then there is the layer's own natural cycle. James Kerr, in charge of ozone research at Environment Canada, says the layer decreases from spring to fall & then thickens again, reaching its maximum level in March. Even the weather can cause ozone fluctuations. Recently the safest sun-tanning in the country has been found in Saskatoon. by Robert Matas The Globe and Mail, Vancouver. ****** SOUTHERN ALBERTA'S TOP TALENT converge at the BROADWAY THEATRE this summer. 1940's Radio Hour August 25th: relive the hayday of live radio! This live production features Jennifer Ing, Audra Foggin, Olivia & Sterling McClung performing. Tickets available at the door or by calling 752-4717. ****** • Super back scrubber Can't get to those hard-to-reach spots while showering? Here's the solution: cut a leg off an old pair of pantyhose, tie a knot in the center and drop a bar of soap in. Then tie another knot at the top of the soap and you've got the perfect scrubber. To use, just grasp both ends of the stocking behind you and you can slide the soap across your back. LIBRARY NEWS: Due to summer holidays & the surprisingly busy days we have had at the library, we regret not getting all the new books out as fast as they are coming in. We have a new book by Jack Weyland "On the Run", & the book "Water World" by Max a. Collins, have you seen this movie now playing in Lethbridge? Two new videos: Land Before Time 11 & Giants with Rick Moranis & Ed O'Neil. If there is anyone who has a few hours to spare each week, we could sure use some extra hands to keep up with the volume of books that go in & out each day, as well as to help us as we attempt to "weed" out those books that are no longer of interest to the public. Please give us a call if you would like to serve your community in this way. Call 758-6498. The Summer Reading Program is still in full swing even though many of the children have left for holidays. Last week for our Mystery World the children were spellbound by the magic tricks demonstrated by Kelly Hatch. Thank you Kelly for your participation in our activity day. The children are still trying to figure out "How did he do that?" Using ink pads & finger paints the children created interesting pictures-creating something out of a "mystery" of fingerprints. It was fun. You can see some of the children's creations in the entry way into the library. We will have one more activity Aug.17th and then a closing party on Aug.24th. Anyone wishing to come & help the kids please call the library at 758-6498. THE FACTS OF (REAL ESTATE) LIFE FACT # 4 "An appropirate listing price will, immediately & consistently, attract attention & generate activity." ' Your listing price must be realistic enough to immediately attract this attention from buyers & brokers. It if does not do so, while competitive properties are attracting attention & generating activity, you have a clear indication that the listing price is not meeting the acid test of the market place & must be adjusted. Fact # 5 "A home that is priced realistically & marketed effectively will usually sell" Unless the price & items are competitive, the chance of a house selling are "slim to none." By Joseph P.
