When making pickles, wash cucumbers, but do not soak them. They will absorb the water, and the brine cannot penetrate the pickles properly. With the fresh summer fruit arriving in the stores, the following is a good filling for a pie: Fresh Peach Pie 4C sliced peaches 1.C white sugar 4 tablespoons flour 1/8 tsp salt 2 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp butter Mix these ingredients together and bake in a double crust pastry. NORM STOKES WELDING On Thursday, July 19, the Community of Milo gathered together for a farewell potluck supper in honor of Rocky, JoAnne, Brett, Katie and Layne Wilson. There were approximately 230 people in attendance. The supper was terrific, plenty of wonderful dishes. We sure have a lot of good cooks. The supper followed by a short presentation to the Wilson family, by Michael Monner, on behalf of the Community. Rocky and JoAnne replied with a wonderful poem thanking everyone for all the fun and support that they have received over the past 17 years. We will miss Rocky, JoAnne, Brett, Katie and Layne. We wish them well in their future endeavors in Coaldale, and hope that they come back and visit as often as they can. About 120 people crammed their families, food, and gear into 31 RV units, and attended the Milo Lions community campout at Enchant Park. John Ivers did a wonderful job organizing the event - he even managed to arrange for sunny weather. Everyone enjoyed visiting with friends, golfing, swimming, playing games, water fights, visiting the museum and buying ice cream. The Lions club served pancake breakfasts for everyone on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Nothing tastes better than that boiled coffee on Sunday morning! The barrel was full of holes, so each team needed “water haulers” and “leak stoppers”. The “leak stoppers” were inventive, using fingers, toes, and even bellies and mouths to plug holes. EVERYONE got wet.T.O.P.S. News. Diet and Blood Pressure If you are overweight and have high blood pressure, a first step is to lose weight, usually through a combination of calorie reduction and increased physical activity. Eating certain kinds of food and avoiding others also may help reduce blood pressure or keep it from getting high in the first place. Some dietary factors to consider in preventing and treating hypertension are: Salt and sodium Many studies in diverse populations have shown that a high sodium intake is associated with higher blood pressure. The National Academy of Sciences, the American Heart Association and the federal government’s “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” recommend limiting sodium intake to 2400 milligrams a day. For cooking at home, low salt and low-sodium cookbooks abound. Or simply spare the salt and, if you like, substitute other spices and flavorings such as pepper, garlic, ginger, onion, or lemon juice. Watch out for some flavorings and ingredients such as monosodium glutamate, soy sauce, and some spice mixtures that contain large quantities of sodium. Also, many processed foods are high in salt and other sodium containing ingredients. You can tell how much sodium is in packaged foods by reading the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels. There, manufacturers must list the amount of sodium (in milligrams) in a serving of food and show (as a percentage) how that amount contributes to the daily reference value for sodium, which is 2400 milligrams. To quickly identify foods with lower sodium contents, look for products with label claims like “no salt added,” “low sodium” or “two-thirds less salt.” These claims must meet government-enforced definitions so that they mean the same for any product on which they appear. If you eat out a lot, you may want to ask restaurants to hold the salt in your orders. Some may already offer lower sodium foods on their menus, so look for menu items with claims like “low sodium.” Nutrition claims on menus must mean the same as they do on packaged food. Before using salt substitutes, which contain potassium chloride, check with your doctor just to make sure they’re all right for you. In general, an increase in potassium can help attain a normal blood pressure, but there may be other factors, such as medicines you are taking and other health factors, that need to be considered. Alcohol Some studies show that low to moderate consumption of alcohol, especially wine, may help reduce heart disease risks. But excessive amounts of alcohol are known to raise blood pressure. Also, if you’re trying to lose weight, you need to remember that alcoholic beverages are calorie dense, providing about 100 to 145 calories a drink but little nutritional benefit. Ask your doctor what is best for you when it comes to alcohol consumption. Calcium and Magnesium Some studies have shown that people whose intakes of calcium are low are more likely to have high blood pressure, but a link has not been proven. The same is true of magnesium. Though the science is uncertain at this time, it can’t hurt to eat a diet with sufficient calcium and magnesium. Good sources of calcium are dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. Choose low fat or nonfat versions of these foods. Other sources of calcium are canned salmon, collard greens, broccoli, soy milk, tofu, and calcium-fortified orange juice and grain products. Good sources of magnesium are whole grains, green leafy vegetables, nuts and legumes. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels to learn how much calcium is in a food. The amount of calcium in a serving and how that amount contributes to the daily reference value for calcium must be listed for all foods Information about a food’s magnesium content may be offered voluntarily. To learn more join us at the T O P S meeting, each Thursday at 8.45 a.m. in the Lutheran Church basement.VILLAGE OF MILO MINUTES FROM THE JUNE 18, 2001 MEETING The regular meeting of the Village of Milo was held on Monday, June 18, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Office. The great birthday party that Harold and our family planned was special in every way. The meal prepared by Allen and Colleen was delicious. The surprise presentation of “my recipe book” printed by “CopiesNow” was truly a wonderful gift. To Terri who baked and decorated my birthday cake, which was a work of art, designed to represent our family, thank you. Thank you for all the cards and gifts received. To our family, grandchildren and relatives for the decorating and setting up tables in the hall for the party and friends who shared this day a very special “thank you”. It took all of you to do it. Janetta E.L.W. News Thank you to - The Milo School Students’ Union for the ‘special’ yearbook with all the students’ autographs and the clock/calculator. I’ll be looking at the book often to rekindle the memories of the Milo Community School. The Milo Community School Parent-Teacher Group for the handsaw that was painted by Marina Vannatta. This saw will take up a very special spot in our new house in Coaldale. The painting shows the new playground in the foreground with the school in the background. It truly is a wonderful gift that I really appreciate. The Milo Community School Staff for their generosity. I’ve already made use of the new attache case this summer. As for the swing, I’m planning to do a lot of reading under its canopy. Again, thank you very much. All the best to each and everyone of you. The July 11th meeting was held at the church. Pastor Ed, Linda and 5 members were present. Vice-President Alice chaired the meeting. Marilyn led the bible study “How do we know when our prayers are answered”. The meditation was read and the offering taken. Minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted after corrections made. The party for Gilbert Vooys will be held Saturday July 28th at the Milo Community Hall. E.L.W. will serve a meal for family and lunch at the open houst from 1:30 to 4 pm. Alice and Marilyn will plan for the food. Carol gave the treasurer’s report and a thank you letter was read from Camp Kuriakos for our donation. The installers will start laying the new carpet and linoleum on July 23rd. It was suggested that we clean the church before the furniture is moved bad Vacation Bible School will run from July 3oth to Aug 3rd. From 6:30 to 8 pm each day in the church basement. A group from the Southern Alta. Bible Camp will run the program. Marilyn adjourned the meeting and lunch was served by Frances. Although they did not win, I am proud of the students’ ideas and efforts. There will be a copy of the video in the school library and the municipal library. It’s short but it is GREAT STUFF! Do take it out and share in the pride of our students and in Milo. Sharon Cockwill. MILO’S OUR COMMUNITY Chorus: Alberta is the province to be And Milo’s our community. Family friends, activities Lots to do and lots to see. 1. Born an raised on the wide prairie The grass grows long and the beasts roam free. Spring brings gophers and geese fly high Wind and showers fill our sky. 2. In Summer it’s baseball and fishing too Gymnastics, soccer, end of school. Lots to do if we look around Dancing and pow wows we have found. Chorus: 3 . In winter it’s hockey and curling too It’s -30, snowy and cold. But we at Milo don’t hold back We’re on the road cuz we’re used to that. Chorus: 4. Milo's our community Great are friends and family. In many ways we work and share. In Milo we’re proud cuz we all care. Chorus: Thankyou very much to Brad McKay and Gordie Marshall on the very well organized Golf I Tournament for the Milo No Stars & Queenstown Cleaners hockey teams. Everyone had a great time and the supper was great too, that Jennifer and her crew put on. Thanks again, Ken and Charlotte Nelson Blankets Canada pinsandneedles@,alberta, com - email Hi Iris!! I wanted to drop you a line to thank you for the many knit and crochet squares that you have brought in to the store for Blankets for Canada. Please extend a special thanks to all the ladies who have done such terrific work, and especially to Alice for the many hours of beautiful work she had done and for the 100 squares she sent in this time. Please know that the blankets do go to the needy in our own area. It is like giving a piece of yourself to someone less fortunate. Thank you again very much for the love you pour into your work God Bless One student told me this was sung to the tune of the Sherry Mackenzie verse ot the marching song (where chorus is- sound ^ins & Needles off i.2 sound of 3,4 etc. ) High River, Ab.Councilor’s Comments SO WHO HAS WON??? If the proposed legislation (to amend the Agriculture Operation Protection Act) is passed as is, concerning the Intensive Livestock Operation (or I.L.O.) controversy, theN.R.C.B. will decide on all future Intensive Livestock Operations. Apparently the Alberta Government will set up guide lines and they will be enforced by a committee under the N.R.C.B. so they will be handled the same as an oil/gas installation, so that if a I.L.O. meets all the rules and regulation, just like an oil well, it will go ahead. So the people who have apposed every I.L.O. in Vulcan County in the last several years, among other people in the province, can take credit for this new scenario, so who has won this? I think our County should be able to roll out the welcome mat now. We could have several new feed-lots and maybe a hog barn or two. This should create jobs, markets for local grain, maybe even some new families in our area. Under the present rule the County had almost complete control over land use and could set the rules once a I L O. was approved, not any more. I’m happy, are you? Grant Lahd. mumummm#Thank you Milo July 19th was a truly wonderful night for us. To see all of you that made it to the farewell supper and to those who had other commitments but expressed your good intentions of having been there, we can’t thank you enough. Thank you too for your generous monetary gilt. We will purchase something that will remind us of this community. Obviously it was very hard to say anything that night. Thus, with the Can Opener’s help, we would like to share a few thoughts that we wish we could have left you with on the 19lh. Milo is ‘home’ and having said that, we can’t help but say that it’s been a "love affair’ that began before we even set foot in here. In Rocky’s last year of University in Lethbridge, he had the privilege of sharing classes with Doreen Sharpe (nee: Healy - Lome and Marlene). This association would prove to be a stepping-stone into Milo. After graduation. Rocky was hired to join the school staff (Wayne Bennett, Dene Peterson & Cliff El le made up the interview committee), replacing John Seaman. The word obviously got out because he received a phone call one night offering him a place to stay while the teacherage was being painted. They say that ‘first impressions’ are the most important. Well, it is safe to say that the generosity and openness of Eva Ivers (Doreen’s grandmother) set the tone of what Milo was all about. Eva took Rocky into her house and fed him, offered him a place to sleep and most importantly, she introduced him to what this community is all about. In that same first week, Murray Phillips offered Rocky, a stranger, credit to charge items (Murray and Gladys always seemed to have everything I needed, no matter what it was!) to help with the move into the house. In no time at all we became part of the community. Friendships developed and experiences were shared. Sharing experiences with others during times of need are what strengthens and solidifies a relationship. The ‘bond’ that solidified the ‘love affair’ was the experience that Milo shared with us when Brett was diagnosed with cancer. The community proved to be so very generous - people offering moral support while others offered whatever services we might have required. Rocky will never forget the night that Alice Bartsch knocked at our backdoor (when Jo- Anne and Brett were in Calgary) and left a monetary donation from the local disaster fund to help offset some of our expenses. Norm and Shannon Reynolds never hesitated to offer a vehicle for Rocky to use and travel to Calgary to visit with Brett and Jo-Anne. Bill Deitz offered a ride into Calgary one weekend. This was a ride Rocky won’t forget because not only did he share time with Bill, but Sonny Vannatta was also on board! When Katie joined our family, the generosity continued. Kathy Vooys would drive into town to pick her up, and then look after her while Rocky worked at school (Jo-Anne and Brett were at Calgary for a week at a time). Robert and Darlene could always be counted on to help us out no matter what. Gladys Phillips was always willing to help out also. Barry and Joanne Monner would often call up and offer a meal to help pass the week while Jo-Anne and Brett were in Calgary. With Brett out of the woods, things got back to ‘normal’ and small town living would prove to be the ‘fruitful’ years of our family life. Knowing that our kids could go about town safely with the members of our community to help and keep a watchful eye out for their safety was always comforting. Baseball has always and will continue to be a part of our lives. Milo offered Rocky the opportunity to coach and play the game. Thanks to the ‘Slo-Stars’ for the memories! Thanks to the kids and parents for the experiences of coaching the various ball teams. Thanks to Lawrence and Doris Clements. Lawrence is the ‘tool man’. We could always count on Lawrence to have a tool and he was always willing to lend them out. Thanks to Linda Booth and Shirley Wilson for always having baking supplies on hand, and Lorraine Stumpf who lent us her ladder over and over again. We have to mention the Milo Lions. The work that this group has done over the years has made a big impression on us. The pancake suppers, charter nights, casinos, bar-b-ques, community campouts, building the ball diamond, and the money they put towards the Terry Fox Run will serve as a model that other groups can look up to. There are just so many of you to thank and we really want to acknowledge your contribution to our family. PLEASE FORGIVE US if we have not mentioned your names (and we know that there are many!). The bottom line is that we’re going to miss this community. Thank you for everything!! Please make sure that when you are passing through Coaldale, you STOP IN - our door will always be open for any “Miloite”! Our new address is 2107 10th Street (T1M 1B4), phone # 345 - 4547.
