At the regular meeting of the Town Council held on Monday the 19th of January, Mr. J, A.rSpencer was present representing the General Committee appointed a short time ago to outline a program for the 1949 jubilee, it being 50 years in 1949, since the Town of Magrath was laid out and first settled and also since the inaugeration of the irrigation works in Southern Alberta. Much of this work took place in or near Magrath and it has meant much to the developement of this part of the.Province. Mr, Spencer outlined a progressive program of events to properly commerate this important event, Mr. B. W. Dow of the Town Council was appointed Chairman pro' tern of the General Committee and will work with Mr. Spencer and others until such time as the permanent committee has been appointed. John Brackep^ leader of the Progressive Conservative; party, told the House of Commons that Canada's wheat contract with Britain cost Canadian farmers $123 million in 1947. He siad the government is keeping the price of wheat down and using this as an excuse to keep down the price of all farm products. He condemned the food contracts with 3ritain on the ground that Canadian farm products are now being sold for less than they can now be produced.
