FRANCHISE FEE NOTICE Please be advised that the Village of Milo will remain with the same local access fee, which is charged to FortisAlberta Inc. (FortisAlberta) for use of municipal lands for its power lines effective January 2011. The fee is recovered by FortisAlberta from its customers as the local access fee on electric billings of all customers that receive electric service in the Village of Milo. This local access fee will remain at $3.87 per month (10%) of the delivery charge of FortisAlberta, excluding energy related riders. This calculation is based on 625kWh consumption in 30 days. Questions or concerns should be directed to Jan Loree Hurl, CAO at (403)599-3883. Thank you. SNOW REMOVAL HUGE thanks to those who assisted the Village with recent snow removal - Doug Marks, Gary Middlestead, Barry Monner, Ron Marks, and to those of you whom I have missed! It is very much appreciated! - Jan Loree Hurl, CAOMilo Skating Rink Notice The Milo Ice Committee would like to hear your opinions on the yearly schedule that is made up for the Skating Rink. Every year, there are more people being removed from the list than added. Therefore, it is getting more and more difficult to make up this schedule. We realize that there are people included that don't use the rink or have children using the rink. Years ago, Dads with children aged kindergarten and up, and teenagers living in the community were automatically added. Once your kids were finished High School, you were taken off the list. This seemed to work quite well and the work was shared by many, but, it appears that changes now need to be made due to decreased interest and lower numbers of volunteers. Some are not working their shifts or finding a replacement. We are very fortunate to have some Volunteers who work tirelessly at ice prep, ice maintenance and general maintenance of the building, but it is a lot to ask of a few. Perhaps, there are people out there in the community that wouldn't mind working a 1-2 week shift in the winter that I haven't included or thought of asking. If you are included in the schedule, but have absolutely no intentions of working your shift or finding a replacement we need to be notified. Instead of a 1 week shift, would everyone be willing to work 2 weeks? Should we have a schedule at all, or just rely on volunteers to show up? We would like to make it known in the community that in the past there has been vandalism to the building and ice surface as recent as in the last week. This not only adds to our expenses every year, (ex. Getting fire extinguishers refilled every time they are sprayed all over the ice surface and lobby, leaving the door wide open with the furnace turned up high) it also costs our Volunteers extra time and frustration. We have locked the building in the past, but the locks and doors were then broken. How do we monitor users so that damage can be stopped? We have had many comments on the schedule over the years, both positive and negative. But, we are wondering if there is a better and more effective way to make this schedule work, because it doesn't seem to be working as well as it has in the past. Any ideas???? The ice at the Arena is just about ready, THANKS, to the "greatly appreciated VOLUNTEERS" who do this every year for the youth in our community. Hats off to you guys for always taking the initiative to just get the job done, and your continuous efforts to maintain the ice and general upkeep. If anyone has any suggestions we would like to hear from you immediately. It's looking like we are going to have to start this schedule (if we can make one work) earlier than normal this year because of the cold weather. Also, we cannot stress enough, the importance of paying your membership fees. The costs to keep this facility running are very expensive and we require the support of all users to keep the doors open. Years ago, we installed a drop box for out of town guests to pay as they use, but eventually this was ripped off the wall and the cash stolen. This is why we solely rely on the community for skating fees. There are a few of us on the Ice Committee who joined when our children enjoyed the rink. Our kids are now grown and we would like to retire, we are asking users to please consider getting involved!!!!! Users of the Rink change, and it is now time for new Committee Members. In the last few years the lack of users and interest in the Arena have been discussed among Committee Members and Volunteers. If the Community would like to maintain this facility we need your show of support. Please call Twyla @ 599-2264 or Colleen @ 599-2306 with your input as soon as possible.Milo and District Agricultural Society FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS Groups in the community can apply to the Ag. I hate to be the one to defy sacred myth, but I believe he's a she. Think about it. Christmas is a big, organized, warm, fuzzy, nurturing social deal, and I have a tough time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off! For starters, the vast majority of men don't even think about selecting gifts until Christmas Eve. It's as if they are all frozen in some kind of Ebenezerian Time Warp until 3 p.m. on Dec.24th, when they (with amazing calm) call other errant men for a last-minute shopping spree. Once at the mall, they always seem surprised to find only Ronco products, socket wrench sets, and mood rings left on the shelves. (You might think this would send them into a fit of panic and guilt, but my husband tells me it's an enormous relief because it lessens the 11th hour decisionmaking burden.) On this count alone, I'm convinced Santa is a woman. Surely, if he were a man, everyone in the universe would wake up Christmas morning to find a rotating musical Chia Pet under the tree, still in the bag. Another problem for a he-Santa would be getting there. First of all, there would be no reindeer because they would all be dead, gutted and strapped on to the rear bumper of the sleigh amid wide-eyed, desperate claims that buck season had been extended. Blitzen's rack would already be on the way to the taxidermist. Even if the male Santa DID have reindeer, he'd still have transportation problems because he would inevitably get lost up there in the snow and clouds and then refuse to stop and ask for directions. Add to this the fact that there would be unavoidable delays in the chimney, where the Bob Vila- like Santa would stop to inspect and repoint bricks in the flue. He would also need to check for carbon monoxide fumes in every gas fireplace, and get under every Christmas tree that is crooked to straighten it to a perfectly upright 90-degree angle. Other reasons why Santa PROBABLY isn't a man: Men can't pack a bag. Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet. Men would feel their masculinity is threatened.having to be seen with all those elves. Men don't answer their mail. Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resembling a "bowlful of jelly." Men aren't interested in stockings unless somebody's wearing them. Finally, being responsible for Christmas would require a commitment. As long as we have each other, good will, peace on earth, faith and Nat King Cole's version of "The Christmas Song," it probably makes little difference what gender Santa is. I just wish she'd quit dressing like a guy!!!mm* - h 1 Seasons Greetings and best wishes for the New Year From Robert, Darlene and the staff at Phillip's Fertilizer May your holidays be merry and bright! - Julie Nelson MAY ALL THE JOYS OF THE SEASON BE YOURS. - from the Volunteers of Milo and District Fire Associationm Milo Community Women invite all ladies in the community to the 25th Advent Program and Fellowship Monday, December 6th, 2010 7:00 pm Hope Lutheran Church, Milo Please consider this your invitation to our special event - i. It’s really user friendly and we are very excited with this progression!! BiblioCommons is the new finding tool that allows library users to find what they are looking for. It incorporates web 2.0 and social networking features, which means that library users can contribute information to the catalogue and interact with each other. • Voice your opinion by adding comments and star ratings about books and movies. • Create lists to share with others about your favorite authors, genres or interests. • Connect and communicate with other users with similar interests in a safe, trusted environment. • Manage your account on-line, place holds, renew items and check due dates. • Build networks of favorite reviewers that result in personalized recommendations. • Explore bestsellers, award winners and newly acquired library materials. • All of these additional discovery features give library users a new and interesting way to find library materials. A HUGE thank-you to all of you snow-angels who have been out helping us to stay safe on our sidewalks and roadways. It is so wonderful to see that great community spirit alive and well even in the cold! In order to keep the rest of you aware of what your Council has been up to, I am going to try my best to give you a quick up-date each month. Raphael, Laurie, Jan-Loree and I all attended a Council Orientation” session in early November provided by Vulcan County with George B.Cuff, a well-known name in local government. We learned what Council’s primary roles are compared to the specific job position and roles of the CAO. He also provided us with many words of wisdom and examples for inspiration. I have been to two Regional meetings: Vulcan (and district) Business Development Society (V.B.D.S.) and the Vulcan and District Waste Commission (V.D.W.C.) and have learned about what services they offer to us. Raphael also attended the Vulcan And District Emergency Services (V.D.E.S.) meeting and other local meetings. Laurie’s meetings were cancelled due to inclement weather, if you have a chance, please stop in at the new V.B.D.S. office (the former Conoco Phillips building across from NAPA) and take a look. I believe we are going to benefit in many ways with our regional partnerships. For more information on all of these groups, please check out their websites below. There are a number of exciting regional projects going forward in the County. One is the Municipal Heritage Partnership Program. It will be used to Identify - Evaluate - Manage historical sites, landscapes, and other sites throughout the County. There are some really neat possibilities lined up with this project. We will be involving many people in the community to spearhead this project. Please contact myself if you have any questions or thoughts about this undertaking. For your enjoyment, you can check out the “Vulcan County History page”. It contains interesting stories and histories on many of the old schools throughout the District. Another plan in progress is the County Way-Finding Signage Project. This involves creating a more co-hesive way of promoting tourism and unity throughout the County by updating various signs and increasing/decreasing signage in many areas. Mayor Raphael and Foreman Louis are both involved with this project so please ask them to find out more information regarding this progressive venture. The Village Office has a binder that contains the “Findings and Recommendations Report” to do with this project for public viewing also. We as a council are currently working on a plan to update our Village website and using this to help with our plan for promotion and communication in general. For those of you on Facebook, we also have a Village of Milo Group page (thanks to Deanna Edwards!) that we will now be using to have discussions and get public input on things and to share ideas. It is also a page to post and videos and photos of “Life in Milo”. So far, we have a few people who will be taking pictures at events to be included on our website. (Thanks Jennifer Gregoire!) If you have any favourite photos or videos of “Life in Milo” present or past, we would love to be able to share them on the website. The information for our website is currently being compiled so we can take advantage of a $500 voucher from V.B.D.S. to create a website. Please contact Jan or Katie if you have something to share. In closing, we would like you to have a chance to check out the Council meeting agenda before hand to see whether there is something that concerns you or that interests you. We have created an e-mail list group for anyone who may wish to see the proposed agenda. Please give your e-mail to Jan at the office if you wish to be included on this list. Thank-you! Have a wonderful December! Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older a gun and 4 bullets. You are allowed to shoot 2 MP’s and 2 illegal immigrants! Of course, this means you will be sent to prison where you will get 3 meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating, air conditioning and all the health care you need! New teeth - no problem. Need glasses, great. New hip, knees, kidney, lungs, heart? All covered. (And your kids can come and visit you as often as they do now). And who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you that you they cannot afford for you to go into a home. Plus, because you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income taxes anymore. Since it snowed last night, I got up early and made a sled with old bam wood and a glue gun. I hand painted it in gold leaf, got out my loom, and made a blanket m peaches an«a mauves Then to make the sled complete, I made a white horse to pull it, from DNA that I had just sitting around in my craft room. By then, it was time to start making the placemats and napkins for my 20 breakfast guests. I'm serving the old standard Stewart twelve-course breakfast, but I'll let you in on a little secret: I didn't have time to make the tables and chairs this morning, so I used the ones I had on hand. Before I moved the table into the dining room, I decided to add just a touch of the holidays. So I repainted the room in pinks and stenciled gold stars on the ceiling. Then, while the homemade bread was rising, I took antique candle molds and made the dishes (exactly the same shade of t-vi+r\ uca EVxt* V\tv>al/~fc*of pep \x;prp miiHp frnm T-Tnncya'nari p.Ipiv wllioH VOI1 C3T1 ffCt £Lt £lllT10St J^AJAAV) V\J UOV 101 Ol VtUVAUUl. I have 40,000 cranberries to string with bay leaves before my speaking engagement at noon. Love, Martha Stewart P.S. When I made the ribbon for this typewriter, I used 1/8-inch gold gauze. I soaked the gauze in a mixture of white grapes and blackberries which I grew, picked, and crushed last week just for fun. Response from Erma Bombeck: Dear Martha, I'm writing this on the back of an old shopping list, pay no attention to the coffee and jelly stains. I'm 20 minutes late getting my daughter up for school, packing a lunch with one hand, on the phone with the dog pound, seems old Ruff needs bailing out, again. Burnt my arm on the curling iron when I was trying to make those cute curly fries, how DO they do that? Still can't find the scissors to cut out some snowflakes, tried using an old disposable razor trashed the tablecloth. Tried that cranberry thing, frozen cranberries mushed up after I defrosted them in the microwave. Oh, and don't use Fruity Pebbles as a substitute in that Rice Knspie snowball recipe, unless you happen to like a disgusting shade that resembles puke! The smoke alarm is going off, talk to ya later. No adult is this creative!! MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six.' STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom good night. 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.' BRITTANY (age 4) had an ear ache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: 'How does it know it's me?' SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough.' DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?' MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?’ TAMMY(age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't your skin fit your face?' JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.' Concerned, James asked: What happened to the flea?' The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget this particular Sunday sermon.'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust.' He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'E-Reader Update Hello again! It’s been a while, and I’m now well into my ownership experience with my Kobo E-Reader. The original issues and distractions have faded, and I thought it would be a good time to add some final comments for those of you still considering the purchase (or placing one on your Christmas list). My overall impression at this point is one of satisfaction - I’m back to reading several books at once, and ‘hitting the bookstore’ on a regular basis. Living in the thriving metropolis of Queenstown is no impediment to my love of books - something I dealt with sadly for the first year or so out here. What are the positives and negatives? I hate to wait. For the true book lover, the Kobo has been a real revelation. Not having to go to the bookstore to browse may be a problem for those who love to chat up the staff, but otherwise having immediate access has proven to be wonderful! Suppose you are reading your favourite magazine, turn to the book reviews and a new book piques your interest. Prior to my Kobo, I would first have to remember either the title or author the next time I hit the bookstore (a remote possibility at best) and then be faced with retail pricing on the book, and the high probability that if the book was indeed popular, it could be sold out. With the E-Reader, the whole process is kind of instant - holding the magazine in my hand I boot up an EBook seller (or two) and in minutes I’m reading. I’m using the Adobe Digital Editions software to manage all aspects of my bookshelves, and it has proven to be easy and very reliable. I’ve had only one book out of dozens that refuses to load. I still read borrowed EBooks, but sadly I’ve kind of chewed through the selection on the Chinook Arch site. More titles are being added all the time, so I’m sure that will be less of an issue as time goes on. I’m also steering away from the PDF format, and just downloading the E-PUB format as that way I can choose my typeface and print size. Let’s talk Price. With some experience I can now tell you that new releases are typically priced at 30% to 40% off shelf retail - a significant saving if you really want to read that book now rather than wait for the paperback to hit the shelves. Remember, the paperback is usually about a year behind the hardcover, or just before the next Christmas, which is prime book giving season. From there pricing is kind of a mixed bag. Fiction released years ago is still anywhere from $6 to $10 - again a significant discount over retail shelf numbers, but 4 or 5 times what you would pay at the used bookstore. The New Author IS out there. EBooks are quickly changing the publishing landscape. All the traditional publishing houses are still out there, but a whole new industry has sprung up. Call it ‘Home-Based Publishing’, or ‘Amateur Fiction’ - thousands of new novels are available that will never see a printed page. Writers can now create, market and sell a book without ever talking to a publisher. Yes, some of the stuff is truly not ready for prime time (much less the death of tree and ink) but there genuine good reads out there if you care to look. What do you risk? Under Mystery and Thrillers at Kobo there are over 500 books like this - all priced at eighty nine cents. Regardless of the genre you can find thousands of stories by struggling new authors. Remember J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter? How long were those stories waiting to be read? I’ve had at least half a dozen pleasant surprises. (And a few where you finish and think “I should try this - I’m way better than that!”) As predicted by me (again) prices are coming down fast, and feature content is going up at the same rate. The new Kindle is just $139US with a ton of features. The new Kobo has WiFi, and is ready to receive all the new magazine and newspaper content (single issue or subscription) many have been waiting for. Other manufacturers are rumored to be hard at work as well. I would suggest that the market has nowhere to go but better over the next year. NO Sharing. ■■ The biggest downside? The pleasure of reading becomes in a sad way even more ‘solitary’. I read a great book, and can’t hand it to my wife or anybody else who I think would enjoy it - something I’ve done hundreds of times in my life. I can’t donate it to the library, or really do anything with it. So that’s where things stand. Make up your own mind. If you end up with one, I’ll be working with the library in January to help out anyone who would like a hand. Cameron IdemThe Hockey Game by Adam Prentice One night after hockey practice, I found out that I had won a contest. I got to go and skate with the Calgary Flames!!!! The game that I went to see was between Calgary Flames and Detroit Red Wings. I had to wait eight long days before finally going. I got two extra tickets so my mom and sister, Sara, went with me. The day finally arrived and the Ladies from Scotiabank got tickets to go see the game with us too. Donna drove us there and we ate at Dairy Queen before going to the Saddledome. In the Saddledome, we had to wait for a while for Blake, the PR person, to take us where we were supposed to go. I had to get dressed in a hallway. When I was partly dressed, I got to go wach the warm-ups. They sure are fast skaters! Alex Tanguay purposely shot a puck our way over the net and I got to keep it. When warmups were done, we went and got fully dressed. The mascot, Harvey the Hound, came down and we got some pictures with him. Then Blake and I went to the Flames bench where he gave me instructions. He told me to skate around the net and as far as the blueline. After we were done skating around, we went to the blueline and we sang O’ Canada and listened to the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Then I went off the ice, got undressed, and went to watch the rest of the game. We had some popcorn and cotton candy of course and it was tasty! Too bad Calgary Flames lost 2-1. Sara, Mom and I all enjoyed our first NHL game. Thank you Melissa and Scotiabank for entering my name in the contest. iSST Scotiabank 3 SaddledomeMilo Arena Dues for the 2010 “11 Season (September to August) FAMILY MEMBERSHIP $65.00 if paid before Dec. 31, $75.00 after Jan. 1 SINGLE MEMBERSHIP $40.00 if paid before Dec. 31 $45.00 after Jan. 1 Snake Valley Drop-In News Health Nurse & Foot Care Wednesday, Dec.8, 1:00 - 2:30 PM Crib Nights Mondays, December 6 &, 20 7:30 PM Wishing everyone all the best this holiday season. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $ 100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. This is what happens next. The butcher takes the $ 100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism. And that is how a Stimulus Package works.
