LOCAL FIRE AUGUST 29 This fire on the Larkins (Greaves) property northeast of Milo started on stubble after a truck went by. It started at Township Road 202 and burned north to the row of trees on the property. It was contained by the quick action of local farmers and Milo Fire Dept and standing wheat crops immediately south and west of this field were spared. Over 40,000 gallons of water was used on the blaze. "Our Town and Villages depend on successful schools and thriving students. maintaining a history of energy, of collaboration and successes." Pallister School Division - Ward 2, Subdivision 1 Trustee. On October 16, VOTE Marilyn Fay MacArthur Trustee My thoughts. Revered "The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life, not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space, but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. ■ 9 These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete. Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember to give a warm hug tothe one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. - Remember to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person might not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind." Author Unknown October Services: Sunday 22nd-9:00 am see you. u/v ckixrch! An Alberta Operator’s License with a Milo address would be ideal. If you have recently moved to the Village, see the Alberta Municipal Affairs Voter Identification Requirements bulletin (also posted here) and available, along with other election information, at http://www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/mc elections P.0 Box 65, Milo, Alberta, Canada. Any of the following documents that has your name and address on it will be accepted as valid proof: ■ Photo identification issued by a Canadian government or agency, whether federal, provincial or local; ■ Bank/credit card statement or personal cheque; ■ Correspondence issued by a school, college or university; ■ Government cheque or cheque stub; ■ Income/property tax assessment notice; ■ Insurance policy or coverage card; ■ Letter from a public curator, public guardian or public trustee; • Pension Plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation; ■ Residential lease or mortgage statement; ■ Statement of government benefits: e.g. Employment insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support, or child tax benefit; ■ Utility bill: e.g. Telephone, public utilities commission, television, electricity, gas or water; ■ Vehicle ownership, registration or insurance certificate; or ■ A letter or form (attestation) confirming that the person lives at the stated address. The letter can be signed by any of the following: ■ authorized representative of a commercial property management company; ■ authorized representative of a correctional institution; ■ authorized representative of a First Nations band or reserve; 2 authorized representative of a post-secondary institution; ■ authorized representative of a facility that provides services to the homeless; or ■ authorized representative of a supportive living facility or treatment centre; Frequently Asked Questions What if I don’t have any photo ID like a driver’s license?' • It doesn’t matter. Just bring anything else you have from the above list that has your name and address on it. Do I need more than one document? • No, only one document with your name and address is needed. * What if all of my documents have a post office box address? • That is ok. As long as it makes sense that a person in your voting subdivision or ward would have a post office box at your mailing address, it will be accepted. The post office box doesn’t have to be in your voting subdivision or ward - just reasonably close by. I used to have to sign a form to say that I am eligible. Do I still have to sign that form? • Yes, you will still have to sign the Statement of Elector Eligibility as well as provide one of the above documents that contains your name and address. What if I don’t have any accounts or documents in my own name? • Have your landlord, facility, or organization manager sign a letter or form (attestation) to confirm your address, and bring it with you to the voting station. Your municipality may have a form that you can use, so check with them. You will have to do this before you come to vote, so plan ahead. * These are the basic requirements for all Alberta municipalities. Your local municipality may have additional requirements or accept additional types of ID. Please check with them. Where: Milo Library - no cost Tuesdays, 10:00 -11:00 a.m. October 17 - November 21 Instructor: Dawn Titterington Internet cafe Participants come from all walks of life and have varying degrees of knowledge and experience with computers. The common factor among all learners is the desire to learn a new skill and keep up with the new generation of technology. This program has been successful as we have had many repeat learners. Some of the benefits realized by the learners is the ability to stay connected with their children and grandchildren through their newly learned skills and a renewed self-confidence. Many learners come to the first class thinking they will never be capable of learning the skills required to create a document, send an email or browse the web. But within a few weeks they are doing all of those things and more. Then I use proven body manipulation techniques to relieve stress from those areas, beginning with a touch as light as the weight of a nickel. Sessions are generally deeply relaxing, and create feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in areas being worked by the therapist. Chronic pain, particularly in the neck and back, and the related discomfort and life stress issues chronic pain causes, can be safely relieved. Think of this as a massage designed for your nervous system instead of muscle tissue. Please ask questions about CST! I welcome the opportunity to share the benefits of this therapy system with you. As a reminder, don’t forget that I’m now direct billing Alberta Blue Cross, AESBP, SunLife, Manulife, Great West Life, etc. Massages are available Fridays & Saturdays at Trends by T.C. Thursday, November 2 2017 9:30-11:30 Milo Community Center Coffee and Snacks Provided ATB Financial Life with Zeke. Zeke was sitting in the living room with his kids after dinner, and the subject of living wills came up. Zeke loudly proclaimed to his kids "I never want to live in any kind of vegetative state - dependent on some machine, and getting my nutrition as fluids from some bottle. If that ever happens to me, promise me you kids will just pull the plug." His children looked at each other, nodded their heads, then unplugged Zeke's computer and TV, and carefully took the beer from his hand, and walked out of the room. Zeke was sitting on a bench in the park when a man who was clearly homeless came over and sat down beside him. The homeless man looked sad, so Zeke asked him if he was OK. "You know," the man said, "up until last week I still had it all! A cook prepared my meals, my room was cleaned, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and the Internet, I went to the pool, the gym, and the library, and I could still go to school." "What happened?" Zeke asked. "Drugs, alcohol, nasty divorce?" "Oh no, nothing like that!" the homeless man replied. "No, no. I was released from prison." In anticipation of this election, we hosted Village General Meetings at the municipal offices in Arrowwood and in Milo. Arrowwood's was at the end of August while Milo’s was on Wednesday, September 13th at 7:00 PM. These meetings have been at the end of each year but we moved it up due to the election; copies of the presentations are available for viewing upon request. While these meetings are intended to be an opportunity for educating interested residents and ratepayers on village business, I am happy to discuss all matters should you contact me. Nomination Day was Monday, September 18, 2017, from 10 AM until Noon in the municipal offices. Candidates for the three-member councils are as follows: Arrowwood: Crane, Matt (Incumbent) Milo: Monner, Barry (Incumbent) Grenier, Clydine (Incumbent) Myers, Louis (Incumbent) Stevenson, Kevyn Schroeder, Scott (Incumbent) Walker, Jack . Walker, Sheldon I would like to take this opportunity to thank Colleen Deitz for her 19 years of service as the Palliser Regional Schools board trustee for the Arrowwood and Milo communities. As trustee, Ms. DeTtz advocated a quality education for students in small rural schools, the importance of rural schools to their communities, and the fiscal responsibilities of the board to maintain service levels and affordable school fees. Nineteen years is no small commitment! Replacing Ms. Deitz, the candidates for Palliser Regional Schools board trustee are: Bexte, Lorelei MacArthur, Marilyn For village residents, Special Ballots are available at the village offices upon request. Administration will assist you with this process; they are intended for those who cannot otherwise make it to a polling station. In Milo, the Advance Poll will be Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, from 7 PM to 9 PM at the village office, while in Arrowwood the Advance Poll will be Friday, October 6th from 7 PM to 9 PM at the village office. Regular polling will occur at the Community Halls from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM on October 16th. PLEASE BE ADVISED, these polling stations ARE ALSO OPEN to VULCAN COUNTY RESIDENTS living within the school division who wish to vote for school trustee. County residents who live in a division where they need to vote for their municipal councilor will need to attend at the polling station for their division. The Arrowwood polling station will also serve as the Division 1 polling station for the Mossleigh and Arrowwood area. Voters in Division 7 will need to go to Lomond, however, Division 7 is NOT voting for school board trustee. No. 2017-08-16-02: Moved by Councillor Myers that council open the Public Hear for proposed Land Use Bylaw 347 at 7:06 PM. CARRIED - Diane Horvath, the village's planner with the Oldman River Regional Services Commission, provided an overview of the changes that are being made to the Land Use Bylaw. She noted that it has been 19 years since the last major update. This new bylaw is necessary to ensure that the Village of Milo is compliant with the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. - With respect to zoning, the new bylaw will consider all municipally owned property to be Public Institutional. - Significantly, the fee schedule for all applications and permits will no longer be embedded within the bylaw and will therefore be easier to amend as necessary. Oldman River Regional Services Commission has been recommending to municipalities that they treat their bylaw fees as a separate schedule which will then be easier to amend by resolution of council. - Ms. Horvath, on behalf of the village, circulated the new bylaw to various agencies for review and comment. This included Alberta Health Services, Alberta Transportation, Vulcan County, Sunshine Gas Co-operative and all other major utility providers. Alberta Transportation responded that they believed the bylaw to be satisfactory, in keeping with their guidelines, and they would like to receive a copy of the bylaw once it is fully authorized for their records. - Discussion was had with those present at public hearing. - Members of the public present had no issues or concerns regarding the proposed bylaw although both Mr. Middlestead and Ms. MacArthur stated their belief that it needed to be enforced and equally applied. Res. No. 2017-08-16-03: Moved by Councillor Myers that council close the Public Hear for proposed Land Use Bylaw 347 at 7:25 PM. CARRIED 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Res. What a whirlwind September has been! I have truly enjoyed my first month at Milo School, I kept hearing about how wonderful the community is and so far I am really impressed with the parental and community support. We had a wonderful reception for our meet the teacher night (and thanks you Ruthann Sherstabetoff and your student helpers for the incredible chilli!), and we were so pleased with the number of parents who attended our first parent council meeting! Parent Council meetings are the best way for you to have input in your child’s education, we want to work as a team to help provide the best educational experience we can for our children! Our parent council is exploring some exciting ideas on how to increase parent engagement in our council meetings and are considering entering the names of parents/guardians in attendance into a draw for an exiting item at the end of the year. Please keep your eyes open for more information as they have made a final decision. our students have dealt with the uncertainties in their school life (like staff changes) as well as their level of cooperation. You may have heard people talking about how we are preparing our children for a future that we cannot imagine, I am confident that our IB leaners will be much more prepared to deal with the guaranteed uncertainties in life. Our theme this year is: This theme pairs well with the exploratory nature of an IB program. We and we are so excited learn and grow with our students this year as we engage in another exciting inquiry based year. Happy learning! -Mrs. Kerry Aiken Given that we are in our third year as an International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school, most parents are aware of the 10 elements we strive to embody as IB learners. One element of the profile that is close to my heart given my recent move is Risk Taker; and so far I am pleased to see this spirit alive at Milo School! It is important that we remember what is means to be a risk taker, because it does not mean that we encourage our IB learners to be impulsive. Instead, the IB Organization states that, “We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.” I work with each group of students for three periods of French each week (more on that when we look at the IB communicator) and I am so impressed with how October Issue 2017 CELEBRATE WITH US! Our grade 4-9 students participated in the Cross Country Run at SABC. Everyone did an awesome job and we are proud to say 7 Jr High students placed in the top 10 in their age categories IWay to go! Thanks to Carol Steiner, and Larry Umscheid for donating apples to our healthy snack program. Milo Green Foods for donating a case of bananas every month and Mrs. Thompson for supplying pears with our water at the Terry Fox Run. Orange shirt day is Wednesday, October 4th. Wear orange to show that every child matters. Thank you Joanne Monner and her team of terrific Terry Fox Run volunteers. On a cold, wet blustery day we all pulled out our inner Terry spirit and did our best to complete the run. Congrats to Hailey and Franz for finishing first. Please join us at the next Parent Council Meeting on Oct. 17 at 6:30pm. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided. Watch for field trip forms for our upcoming Treaty 7 Fort Calgary trip! The book fair will be open to students during recesses until Oct. 5th. Greetings from Mr. Munton Welcome back! My name is Mr. Munton and I am the new junior high homeroom teacher this year. The first couple weeks I have been establishing expectations and encouraging students to take accountability for their own learning. In Language Arts, students are working daily in a growth mindset journal. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Many people hold a fixed mindset. In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They also Relieve that talent alone creates success—without effort. So the belief that you lack talent can lead to viewing challenges as insurmountable, so why even try? This mindset is what I am encouraging students to eliminate in their own thinking. It is my belief that teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in all areas of life, not just in the classroom. Also, in Language Arts, we have discussed the difference between lazy and strong verbs, and we have researched, read articles, and answered questions about a great Canadian, Terry Fox. Later on in the school year we will be doing two novel studies as well as diving into the key elements of effective writing. In grade 9 Social Studies, students have been learning about democracy and the branches of the federal government. Soon we will be discussing political parties and how their ideologies line up on the political spectrum. Grade 7s and 8s learned about some of the First Nations groups that inhabited eastern North America prior to Confederation. They are now learning about some of the famous explorers who founded Canada, such as John Cabot, and Samuel de Champlain. In Math with the Grade 7 to 9 class, we started by reviewing concepts such as prime/composite numbers, least common denominators, rounding, and exponents. Students are now well into their first units, looking at multiplying and dividing decimals, the Pythagorean theorem and rational numbers. In middle elementary math, students have been looking at different types of graphs, with specific examination of bar and pictographs. We also had a review of basic division facts and learned how to use a multiplication table to answer division questions. In Physical Education, students have been running each class in preparation for the cross country meet on Monday. We have also taken advantage of the great weather working on our football skills outside. Our next unit will be volleyball. It has been a pleasure to work with such a wonderful group of students over the past two weeks! I believe we are going to have a tremendous year, learning and challenging ourselves to be better students with high expectations. Please visit our website at www.miloschool.ca to register for school cash online. Not only is this an easy way for you to pay for school fees, field trips, yearbooks and more, but it is more secure to reduce the cheques and cash in schools. Thank you! Page 2 >MILO SchOCH Empowering Lifelong Learneri October 2017 • Milo School • www. miloschool.ca Kirk's Corner In reading, the students are learning how to choose “just right” books to put in their book boxes. Also students are making connections to text by thinking about the story before reading it. Currently in writing we are writing stories for the Fall Fair. The students have great and interesting ideas. I’m glad I don’t have to judge these amazing stories. We had a lot of fun building repeating patterns this month. The students all know how to tell the core of a pattern. The grade threes worked on increasing patterns. ’ Our first transdisciplinary theme is How the World Works, which focuses on the science curriculum. The grade ones are looking at seasonal changes and colours, while the grades 2-3 are studying magnetism. Currently they are building a magnet toy to enter into the Fall Fair under the scrap craft section. We are excited to be in the Terry Fox run on Thursday and are busy working on our entries for the Fall Fair. Milo Fall Fair entry fees will be paid for by The Local ATA 19, so the students will not have entrance fees. Thank you ATA :) Don’t forget the Book Fair is atthe Beginning of Oct. WE WANT YOU!! Can you come into our class and read with our students? Miss K’s Classroom: Just a quick report on our grade 4,5,6 students here at Milo Community School. i Our students have been working hard to develop their art skills using paint and pencil as they prepare for our fall fair. They’ve also been writing stories and poems which will be entered at their respective categories. Our goal is to submit more entries than Mrs. Kirk's Grade 1,2,3 class. Students have been preparing themselves for Thursday’s Terry Fox run through their reading and gym activities. Our inquiry unit is based largely in the social curriculum as we work through the transdisciplinary theme How we Organize Ourselves. The grade 6 students are focused on the structure of democracy. Meanwhile the grade 4-5 students are looking into leadership by examining the required skills and characteristics. This theme of How we Organize Ourselves has also tied nicely to our routines and classroom decisions which we have been working hard to establish. As I am also teaching grade 7-9 science I am excited to fill you in on their progress. Our grade 7-8 students are working through the planet earth unit and are currently writing reports as seismologists. Our grade 9 students are exploring the topic of biodiversity through the exploration of local bird species. The first telephone co-operative in the area was Lake McGregor Mutual Telephone Company, established in November, 1934, with initial shareholders required to take 25 shares, at $1.00 each. An initial meeting to create a telephone co-operative east of Milo was held in late May, 1935. Following this meeting a canvas was made of prospective subscribers, and with the commitment of 31 individuals, Milo Mutual Telephone Company was organized in June, 1935. Shares were offered at $32.50 each, and it was agreed that the board would be able to “.access all shareholders on a proportional basis for necessary labor to reconstruct and repair lines.” In April 1964, the three area mutual telephone companies, Lake McGregor, Queenstown and Milo, decided to amalgamate, and operate as Milo Mutual Telephone Company. In June 1966, Milo Mutual Telephone Company decided to support a proposal that their operations be taken over by Alberta Government Telephones, and an auction was held in October of that year to dispose of the assets of the company. fcMILO Community School Empowering Lifelong Learners Milo School Council Annual Report International Baccalaureate Please join us every third Tuesday for School Council Meeting at 6:30 pm at Milo School.
